I believe that what is commonly referred to as “symptoms” are behaviors, attitudes, or ways of being that were creative adaptations to adverse circumstances. They become “symptoms” when they become fixed ways of perceiving or behaving across all contexts without discernment. I believe people are often unaware of these patterns, as they have become an inherent part of their way of experiencing themselves and the world. I view a significant part of my role as a therapist is to help you become aware of how these things once helped you, as well as how they are impacting you now. This new awareness will provide you with the opportunity to decide what you would like to continue or expand in your life and what you would like to leave behind. This often means reconnecting you to your inherent wisdom.
I regard being a part of your therapeutic work and bearing witness to your life and your story as an honor and a privilege. I will approach you with respect and care. In order to facilitate your awareness, I will utilize observation, humor, compassion, and a combination of support and challenge. I work primarily from an Existential/Gestalt framework. This is an experiential approach, meaning you will experiment with new behaviors or ways of being. The therapy sessions provide space for safe experimentation. Therapy can be uncomfortable or painful at times. However, most people find that the temporary discomfort is worth the benefits of long-lasting change.
